Balingup cheese factory
Balingup Cheese Factory 1933

The town of Balingup is located in Western Australia’s south west, 2.5 hours’ drive or 250km south of Perth in the Shire of Donnybrook, WA’s apple capital. Balingup is located in the picturesque Blackwood River Valley, in amongst old growth forests, orchards and farmland.

If you’re camping in Balingup you’re likely to spot wineries, beef cattle and market gardens in the area. However, it’s dairy farming that was originally the major industry in Balingup, with the first cheese factory built in 1933.

Due to a lack of suitable land, dairy farming was no longer lucrative in the late 1970s and so the factory closed. It would later re-open as an arts and crafts centre, which is still there today. The Old Cheese Factory Craft Centre is well worth a visit for all things handicraft; pottery, timber, knick-knacks, clothing and more (any number of goodies to remind you of your relaxing stay).

For the adventurous at heart, the Bibbulmun Track passes through the town’s main street, which is also in close proximity to the Munda Biddi Trail. You can canoe down the Blackwood River, play croquet, lawn bowls or golf, or simply settle in for a quiet picnic at the heritage-listed Golden Valley Tree Park. You can even pay a visit to the Balingup Lavender Farm – the first of its kind in WA to produce pure essential lavender oil.

Grimwade Settlement

Grimwade was once a mill town, but all that remains of the old town are some remnants and scattered footings.

This is a free campsite 13km north east of Balingup. In it you’ll find a large dam where the water is clean for most of the year, with camp sites on the bank near a small jetty. There are flatter camping spots beside a huge pool on Balingup Brook, good for swimming and canoeing.

The site doesn’t have any amenities, so be sure to bring your own food and fresh water. There aren’t any rubbish bins, so you’ll also need to take any rubbish with you.

To access Grimwade Settlement, drive north on South Western Highway from Balingup for 900 metres, then turn right onto Grimwade Road. Continue on this road; you’ll pass the Kirup-Grimwade Road t-junction at 9km. Continue a further 2.5km, then there are three (unsignposted) turnoffs into the camping areas on the left-hand side of the road.
